My Hair Can’t Loc Me Down

At one point in our lives, we have considered getting locs. For many, the decision to not pursue their desire to have locs usually stems from workplace politics. The corporate world has prevented many women and men of color from wearing locs and in some cases, have forced them to cut them off. Locs have had a good and bad reputation depending on who you speak to, but have always been celebrated at one time or another. In the natural hair community, there is a clear distinction when it comes to locs.

Although they are natural, they don’t get much love in the natural hair world. For many loc’d sistas and brothas, having locs means you don’t get celebrated often on many natural hair pages, magazines and digital publications unless it’s specifically geared to locs. Why is that? For many reasons unknown and unnecessary, locs are still very versatile and beautiful. This post is dedicated to the beauty of locs.

Traditional Locs

Traditional locs are normally created through palm rolling medium to large amounts of hair. Traditional locs require using a balm or wax to create them.

Freeform locs are another version of traditional locs and are not always embraced. Freeform locs are still beautiful and versatile.

Styling locs doesn’t mean you are limited to a few styles. You can create several styles that don’t require high maintenance.

Sister locs are created by using a special tool. They are much smaller than traditional locs because they are made with smaller portions of hair.
